A group of Non-resident Indians NRIs came together to discuss the anti-corruption movement in India supporting Anna Hazare in seeking a stronger anti-corruption law - the Jan Lokpal Bill

Over a hundred concerned Indians living in Hong Kong attended the event, which took place on the eve of India’s Independence Day at Hong Kong Visual Art Center, Hong Kong. “It was inspiring to see Indians from varied backgrounds and age groups – feel connected with this major issue being discussed in India and intending to support the demand for a meaningful independent body for investigating matters of corruption at all levels,”.

“Our motif is not to see who is right or wrong, but rather to get as much support for a bill that can set the ball rolling for the better India,” added by one of the IAC Volunteers. The event observed various activities to involve the participants. Mr Gurunathan, a Guest Speaker and a respected NRI in Hong Kong, explained the importance of “Individual Purification” if we want to sustain the positive change expected from the Jan Lokpal Bill.

The event was also honored by presence of Mr. Rajesh Sharma (Asst. Professor at School of Law, City University, Hong Kong). Mr. Sharma is also a member of Basic Law Education Committee and a member of Asian WTO Research Network, and is Associate Director of Hong Kong WTO Research Institute.

Sharma said the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has been very successful in Hong Kong. But ICAC too faced its own challenges & disputes and over time has evolved in to a very effective force against Corruption.

Through pre-recorded videos, the audience listened to Dr. Kiran Bedi and Mr. Arvind Kejriwal’s thoughts on Jan Lok Pal.

In response to Anna Hazare’s call, many Indians who attended the event volunteered for creating awareness about the Jan Lok Pal amongst Hong Kong based Indians by distributing leaflets and even more pledged their support for the ‘NRIs Calling Home’ movement – under which each NRI will call 20 friends / relatives in India every day to create awareness.
