Haasan’s debut Hindi film, Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981) had memorable songs and a tragic end that left an impact.

The actor won his first National Award for Sadma (1983) where he portrayed a teacher who falls in love with a girl suffering from amnesia. Surmai ankhiyon mein sounds haunting till date.

Nayakan (1987) won him the National Award for Best Actor. He essayed the role of don Velunayakan to perfection.

Appu Raja (1990) starred Kamal Haasan in a triple role, most notable amongst them being that of the dwarf clown.

Chachi 420 (1998) was the Indian version of Mrs Doubtfire with Kamal playing the title role in this laugh riot.

Directed by Haasan, Hey Ram (2000), a social drama depicted the murder of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse.

A science fiction film, Dashavatar (2008) featured Kamal Haasan in 10 different roles.

Released this year, Vishwaroopam was a espionage thriller written, directed and co-produced by Kamal Haasan who also played the lead role. There were controversies, regarding the film's plotline which led to an official ban for 15 days in Tamil Nadu.
